Choosing a Rental Car

Every car lover is going to go through a period when his or her car is being worked on, and a rental is necessary.  This happened for me in 2000, when my beloved first Nissan 280ZX was rearended and had to be repaired.  The other driver’s car insurance paid for me to have an Orlando car rental for a month while my car was being fixed.

When you are really attached to your own car or a certain kind of car, driving a rental car is almost excruciating.  Here is some advice for choosing a Fort Lauderdale car rental that will not be unbearable to drive.

  1. Choose a model that feels similar to your own car.  Sometimes it’s worthwhile to pay a little extra for something that’s a little more enjoyable to drive, but you may not have to.  See what they have available, as different models can feel very different, even in the same class (compact, mid-size, etc.).  One thing I wished I’d done was to ask for a stick, as I rather detest driving cars with automatic transmissions.
  2. Consider choosing a car with some power.  The compact cars in the lowest (and cheapest) class are usually slugs.  If you are used to driving something with more power, driving a slug is going to make you want to pound a hole in the dashboard.  Trust me on this one — get a faster car!
  3. Bring something with you that makes the rental feel more like home.  Whether that’s a special rear view mirror ornament, a pillow to sit on, or even just a scrunchie to throw around the shifter, make that car yours for the amount of time you’ve got it!

Having to drive a rental car isn’t fun for those who have a love affair with their own cars, but it doesn’t have to be torture.  Next time you have to drive an Orlando airport car rental, be prepared to make it the most enjoyable experience you can possibly manage!
